2026 Social Media Trends by Platform: What’s Working Now

We’ve covered the big picture social media trends shaping 2026. Now it’s time to zoom in.

Because while the overall direction is clear, each platform is evolving differently. User behavior is shifting, formats are rising (or falling), and what worked last year may not work the same way today.

See how each social media platform is performing in 2026, based on insights from the Metricool 2026 Social Media Study, along with what it actually means for your strategy.

LinkedIn: Growth Is Slowing, Strategy Matters More

LinkedIn is still growing, but getting noticed is harder than it used to be.

In 2025, impressions dropped by 23%, which means posting consistently without intention is no longer enough. Content needs to be purposeful, valuable, and clearly written for a specific audience.

Tone matters more than ever. Formal, corporate-style posts are underperforming, while conversational, human content is seeing stronger results. Posts that sound like they were written by a real person, not a brand committee, are winning.

  • When it comes to formats, polls are standing out with 158% more impressions, and carousels continue to drive engagement with 247% more interactions.
  • Another important shift: personal profiles are increasingly outperforming company pages, especially once accounts surpass 100,000 followers.

One smart way to adapt is through Employee Generated Content. Encouraging your team to share brand-related content through their personal profiles expands reach and builds trust faster than corporate messaging alone.

Pinterest: Fewer Impressions, Stronger Engagement

Pinterest continues to solidify its role as a discovery and inspiration platform. Posting activity increased by 131% in 2025, yet impressions dropped by nearly 59% and interactions declined by about 48%. At first glance, that sounds discouraging, but engagement actually rose by almost 26%.

What this tells us is that while fewer people may see each post, the audience that does is more aligned and more likely to engage. Pinterest is becoming more competitive, but also more intentional. Brands that treat Pinterest as a long-term visibility and inspiration channel, rather than a quick-win traffic source, will benefit the most.

Threads: Built for Conversation, Not Perfection

Threads continues to grow rapidly, now surpassing 400 million monthly users. On average, each post generates around 1,500 impressions.

Large accounts are extremely active, with many posting over 50 times per week. This is not accidental. Threads thrives on conversation, momentum, and frequency.

Many creators are seeing higher engagement and impressions on Threads than on X, especially when content is casual, spontaneous, and unpolished.

Threads performs best when you stop overthinking your posts. Raw thoughts, quick takes, and real-time conversations consistently outperform carefully crafted content.

X (Twitter): Engagement Up, Traffic Down

X remains a conversation-first platform. Impressions declined by 5% in 2025, but interactions increased by 12%. The majority of engagement comes from replies and quote reposts, not passive likes.

At the same time, external link clicks dropped by 28%. The platform is clearly prioritizing on-platform interaction over sending users elsewhere.

Video content continues to perform well, generating 35% more interactions and helping boost visibility in crowded feeds.

If your goal on X is conversation, commentary, or thought leadership, it can still be effective. If your goal is driving traffic off-platform, expectations should be adjusted.

YouTube: Long-Form Content Is Thriving

YouTube remains one of the strongest platforms going into 2026.

In 2025, views increased by 76%, interactions rose by 11%, and posting volume jumped by 53%. More creators are investing in YouTube, and audiences are responding.

Shorts are still effective for reach, but long-form content is what builds community, authority, and loyalty.

The idea that YouTube is “too hard” is becoming outdated. Weekly posting frequency is significantly higher than TikTok and Instagram Reels, proving creators are embracing the platform rather than avoiding it.

Bluesky: Small but Promising

Bluesky is carving out its place in the social landscape. In 2025, it surpassed 40 million registered users and introduced features like three-minute videos, message filtering, and official verification. Three-minute video is currently the highest-performing format on the platform.

While overall performance still trails behind larger platforms, accounts with under 100,000 followers are seeing higher interaction rates on Bluesky than on X. For early adopters and conversation-led brands, Bluesky is worth watching.

Facebook: Very Much Alive

Despite its reputation, Facebook is far from dead. Over three billion users still access the platform each month, making it the largest social network globally. Performance data from 2025 shows meaningful growth compared to 2024.

Average reach increased by 51%, impressions rose by 57%, and interactions jumped by 56%. Facebook remains a powerful platform, particularly for community-based businesses and local brands.

Google Business Profile: Your Most Valuable Digital Storefront

Your Google Business Profile is not optional. It is essential.

Nearly half of all Google searches are for nearby services, and verified businesses are significantly more trusted by users.

In 2025, Metricool data showed:

• Direction requests increased by 34%

• Food orders increased by 78%

• Mobile search impressions increased by 30%

A well-optimized Google Business Profile actively drives visibility, trust, and conversions, especially for local businesses.

Instagram: Quality Over Quantity

Instagram surpassed three billion monthly users in 2025 and continued to push short-form video. Accounts grew by 64%, but reach and interactions declined.

This reinforces an important point: posting more does not guarantee better results.

Reels still generate the most interactions, but carousels consistently deliver the highest reach, impressions, and engagement despite being underutilized. Stories remain effective for nurturing existing followers.

The strongest Instagram strategies in 2026 balance carousels, Reels, and Stories with a clear focus on quality.

TikTok: Still Powerful, But More Competitive

TikTok remains a major player, but performance declined across the board in 2025.

Views dropped by 17%, reach declined by 19%, and interactions fell by 32%. There is simply more content than ever, making it harder to stand out.

At the same time, TikTok’s push into social commerce is accelerating. TikTok Shop generated over $26 billion in sales, doubling previous numbers.

Entertainment and shopping are merging, and brands that understand this shift will have an advantage.

Key Takeaways for 2026

Across platforms, a few clear themes stand out:

  • Private and direct spaces are growing
  • Platforms are investing heavily in DMs, in-app messaging, and closer community interactions.
  • Video continues to dominate
  • It drives the most visibility, engagement, and reach, with long-form video becoming more valuable than ever.
  • Users want control
  • Custom feeds and content preferences are reshaping how people discover and consume content.
  • Social media in 2026 is less about doing more and more about doing what matters. Strategy, relevance, and intentional content will always outperform volume.
